bridal makeup artists.

Wedding day. The best day ever.

Planning a wedding. Not so much.

You're stressed about money. Everyone is giving you a lot of opinions. Family members put a lot of pressure for things to be a certain way.

There are a few parts of your wedding that are truly and completely all up to your decision. The makeup artist being one of them.

First of all, why do you need a professional makeup artist to begin with?

  1. Training. Yes, you may be absolutely fabulous at doing your own makeup on a daily basis or for a night out on the town. However, wedding makeup is another beast of its own. You are being photographed, often with flash, and the day is very long. Will your makeup withstand tears, sweat, and longevity. A professional is specifically trained to combat all of these issues with knowledge in product and application. Furthermore, an artist will see you differently than you see yourself. They will be able to make recommendations that you likely would never consider. This is where the importance of a trial comes in handy. With your input, your makeup artist will come up with the perfect look for your special day.
  2. Relaxation. Even as a professional artist myself, I hired a makeup artist for my own wedding for the primary reason that I wanted to relax. I didn't want to worry if I would perfectly get my own lashes on or if I was too excited to have a steady hand. It was important to me that I was able to relinquish control and trust my beauty team. It made all the difference.

Now, let's talk about what to look for in a makeup artist.

  1. Style. This may be the most obvious and first factor in choosing your bridal artist. You have a particular look in mind for your special day and every artist has their own skill set and style. Utilize the internet and look for people in your area whose work you love. Instagram. Facebook. Yelp. Google. Everyone is online nowadays and it should be easy enough to find someone whose style you love. On the other hand, word of mouth is often a better way to hire someone you like and trust. Most likely you know someone who has already gotten married. Did you like their makeup? Talk to them. Did they have a positive experience with their vendors?

  2. Personality. Equivalent to style is an artist's personality. You and your girls are spending a lot of time in a room with this person or people. It is important that your personalities gel well. The last thing you need the morning of your wedding is to not get along with the person closest to your face.

  3. Training. Look through the artist's website, typically on their "about me" page, for their training. Different areas of the world have varying requirements, but all artists should have some amount of formal or informal training. Is it important to you that they have knowledge of skincare? Look to see if they have gone to cosmetology or esthetician school. Is it important to you that an artist has brand training? Do you particularly like certain makeup brands? The about me section on an artist's website will be a small glimpse into their skillset and personality.

  4. Communication. Despite where you initiate contact, do they respond quickly? Does the artist keep communication on the same platform? Are these qualities important to you?

  5. Transparency. This is personally very important to me, but may not be as much for you. Is the artist, or any vendor for that matter, forthcoming with information? Do they provide you with their terms and conditions right off the bat or do you have to work to get the whole picture. All vendors have boundaries whether it be start time, number of clients, etc. It helps you to know what a vendor will or will not do.

  6. Cost. I put this last on the list intentionally. While I understand that budgets are important and can be the cause of a lot of wedding stress, bottom line is that you get what you pay for. Look at other artists in the area to make sure the cost feels reasonable. Keep in mind that you are paying for the artist's knowledge, products, time spent communicating, and time spent organizing your documents.

Bottom line, there are endless benefits to hiring a professional! Best of luck in your planning and have the best wedding day ever!

sarah + john.

I had the immense pleasure of meeting Sarah at the beginning of August 2017 just before my trip to Spain. We met for coffee at Starbucks along with her sweet mama. We got to chatting and meshed really well right away.

What really hit home was when Mom shared her happiness in Sarah's future husband. She welled up with tears sharing how well he takes care of her. Especially as her health fluctuates, sometimes day to day. Sarah's health had never been better as when John stepped into her life.

There is something about love that is truly healing.

I too experienced the same transformation. At the age of 13, I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. I will spare you the dirty details. However, through the support and care of my now wife, I received the first all clear from my doctor in 2016.

Needless to say, Sarah, Mom and I really bonded. Immediately, Sarah wanted to book me.

The makeup trial was so much fun. Again, mom joined and we chit chatted about everything from wedding plans to party stories and what I was doing. It felt like we were old friends catching up!

Not only was Sarah such a sweet heart, fun, and extremely relaxed, but beyond organized! I could not have asked for a better bride! She had inspiration photos for each girl and clearly read through my contract.

Then the wedding day. SO. MUCH. FUN! Each girl was equally as kind and fun as Sarah. Conversation was so easy and everyone was extremely happy with their final looks.

Sarah and John- I wish you all the happiness, health, patience, and peace in the world! May you enjoy the small details of life as strongly as the big adventures. Cheers to your love!

jaime + adam.

Jaime has known my wife since their church camp days in elementary school. We are all often reminded by the random outbursts of church songs.

I met Jaime my first holiday season with Bianca. From all the stories, I was very excited to meet this gal and she certainly lived up to the hype.

No joke, my face hurts from laughing so much with every visit.

Maybe a year later, we heard about this Adam guy. They appeared to really enjoy one another, and what more could you want for your friend? We were excited to meet this guy.

Halloween 2015, Las Vegas. We met Adam.

Remember my face hurting from Jaime? Yea, now add my abs to the list too! They are cut from the same cloth.

Jaime and Adam truly make a dynamic pair! They are tailor made for one another. Which was confirmed by Adam's friends upon meeting them at their joint bachelor/bachelorette weekend. Again, hurting cheeks and abs before the weekend was over.

When the two got in engaged during a vacation in Italy, we were overjoyed. And I even more so when she asked me to do her bridal makeup!

It was such a special day and I really pampered her. From a cleansing facial massage to hydrating sheet mask, I gave Jaime the full luxury experience. She was a glowing bride and I felt honored to be with her on her special day.

The day was beautiful, but what's even more so is their growing love for one another and now with their dog, Gordo. I feel honored to call this couple my dear friends.

shannon + andy.

I absolutely love when makeup brings people from my past back into my life.

Shannon and I met my freshman year of high school while I was on the song pom dance team and her a cheerleader. Of all the cheerleaders, she was the most welcoming to the dancers and a ball of fun!

When Shannon contacted me for her wedding, I was elated! It is so much fun reconnecting with old friends.

Right away, Shannon shared her struggles with me. Not only is she has the most extreme case of celiac I have ever heard of, but she is allergic to most ingredients in SPF and silicone.

This did not scare me away whatsoever, and I did my research.

Lots and lots of research.

When a client comes to me with allergies or sensitivities I look up the ingredients in all of my products and have them bring their own makeup kit to their trial. For Shannon, I was so nervous that I was overly cautious and ended up being unhappy with the results. When this happens, I will offer my brides a second trial free of charge.

And I am so glad I did.

I was able to try additional products and tools. Luckily, there was no problem whatsoever. We were both over the moon with the final look.

With their passion of super heroes, they chose a uniquely themed wedding and venue: Captain America at the Tech Museum in San Jose, California.

I was most excited about the look Shannon chose. To stick with the super hero theme, she chose a bad ass woman to emulate: Agent Carter. A classic beauty from the 1940s.

What really touched me about this day was Andy's love for Shannon. Of course Shannon gushed about her love to me, but it's when the bride's friends share their fondness of the groom that will often bring tears to my eye.
